Spruce  * Special Use *Spruce trees are extremely hardy throughout all of New England and the far north. Useful in harsh windy areas such as a lakeside or mountaintop where other trees have difficulty. Prickly, needles make it very deer resistant but also offer birds protection for nesting. The fast growing species can gain 1' per year and will be ten feet taller in ten years - but for the average middle age home owner a spruce will not reach the 60' height in the home owners lifetime.
