| If you are seriously considering a professional landscape design for your property, there are several questions you should ask yourself as your very first step. This will save you time, money and remove the expense of having to possibly re-do this a few years later. In the 7 steps below – It is important to list all that is important to you. Draw a rough sketch of the area you want to have your landscape design. Note any specific plants, and fixed structures that will remain. Note locations of any overhead wires, utility boxes, septic system, water lines, or gas lines. Note locations of large trees, and shaded areas or other obstacles that affect the design. Consult with the entire family if possible.
Make a list of specific uses of the area, barbecue, playing ball, graowing vegetables, lawn chairs, pet area, or bird watching etc... Are there any areas that need screening from noisy traffic, block a poor view, hide a woodpile, create a windbreak or define your property line boundary?
Are there other special needs or goals to be considered? Reduce watering or mowing, create shade, attract wildlife or provide entertainment area, patio or walkway, arbors, fence, gazebo, retaining walls, water feature? Is there a specific problem area or a deer problem? Are there any allergies that have to be considered?
What is your personal taste like? Do you prefer Formal design, Oriental, Classical English, Colorful Cottage Style, Whimsical, Elegant, Edible or Native? it can be extremely helpful to pick up some gardening magazines and mark what appeals to you the most. Do you have any specific color preferences, size or seasonal limitations?
Visit our Garden Center and list any plants that you especially like as well as any that you dislike and don't want to be included in your design. Do you need shade trees, fruit trees, flowering trees and shrubs or do you prefer evergreens? Do you want to incorperate roses, perennials or annuals in the design?
Work out a budget and determine if you will do part of or install the entire project yourself, do project in phases - or hire a local landscaping contractor.
The answers to all the above questions as well as your sketch, notes, lists and digital images are very important to have with you during the initial appointment with Sue Remki our creative landscape designer.
