"Where your daydream landscape becomes reality"

Curb Apeal - Landscaping

Are you trying to sell your house? Realtors will tell you that curb appeal can be key. What homebuyers see as they first drive by your house can squash a potential sale, or make your home rise to the top of the list, and what they see, besides the siding and roof, is your landscaping.

What does your landscaping say? Is it bland and colorless? Are the shrubs trying to overtake the house? Does it look like it a high maintenance yard? Does it look very outdated or like an overgrown jungle? Is it attractive and inviting?

Have you ignored the yard? If you don't usually take much time to maintain a well-kept and attractive garden, when putting your house on the market, it's time to spruce up the outdoors, too.

It's a big part of your investment ~ Investing a few dollars and hours in landscaping can help your property be more memorable to potential home buyers, as well as attractive. Keep your lawn green, mowed and tidy, and rake up the grass remains. Trim your trees and shrubs; remove dead, diseased or damaged branches. Weed your perennial beds and put down fresh mulch. You may be surprised how much more attractive this makes your yard.

It could use some work ~ Even if your yard has not been the most attractive on the block, there are some quick and easy options to help. You can place containers of colorful flowers around your front door, steps, and between shrubs welcoming potential buyers. If you have a deck, install window boxes filled with herbs and or flowers. And don't forget the charm of hanging baskets for a covered porch or beneath trees.

Nothing is flowering right now ~ Woody shrubs not in bloom can be made more attractive with flower-filled containers placed in front of them. Select bright and colorful annual flowers based on sun or shady location, in six-packs, four or six inch pots, and creatively plant them into a large decorative container. Think of the eye appeal of combining something tall (focal point), and something mid-sized (filler) and something spilling over the sides of the pot.

Pick some colorful pottery ~ There are many sizes and colors of containers to compliment your garden style. If in doubt, err on the side of the larger container. Plant roots need room to grow and thrive. Select a premium potting mix and add a slow-release fertilizer and Soil Moist you won't need to remember to fertilize during your busy selling season.

If you simply have no green thumb or no free time ~ We have pre-planted containers intended for a sunny spots or the shade. For sunny areas, choose geraniums or petunias. Inpatients and fuchsia do better in shady areas, like under trees or the north side of your house. Cherry tomato plants are charming on the deck or near the barbeque. Be sure to water your plants and deadhead the flowers to prolong the bloom throughout summer.

If you have a vegetable garden ~ Sharpen your hoe and keep it weed-free and attractive. Scout for insects and remove any unhealthy plants. If your homebuyer is a vegetable gardener, seeing a home with a productive spot for their vegetables can be a huge selling point, while a weedy plot will encourage them to walk away.

Whether you have a green thumb or not, presenting an attractive, inviting yard to prospective buyers is a huge plus. Colorful, well-placed plants will say, "Hi there! Come on in - you're welcome here!"
